The SID chip (Sound Interface Device, MOS 6581 or later 8580) is still a cult object among electronic musicians: its three voices with analogue oscillators, resonant filter and envelope generator produced sounds of genuine character. Composers Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway and Chris Hülsbeck wrote soundtracks that were real musical compositions, not jingles. The 6581 and 8580 have different sonic characters — the 6581's filter is considered warmer and more distinctive — and there are collectors who seek specific computer models based solely on which chip is installed. The original "breadbin" and the C64C are the two main form factors. The 1541 floppy drive cost nearly as much as the computer itself and communicated via a deliberately slow serial protocol: the Epyx FastLoad cartridge was arguably the first must-have accessory in gaming history.
