The PS3 has four distinct hardware generations, and the first is the only one that genuinely matters from a hardware collector's perspective: the 20GB and 60GB FAT models (NTSC) and the 60GB PAL included the PS2's Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer chips physically on the board, providing near-total backwards compatibility. The North American 80GB used partial software emulation. All Slim (2009) and Super Slim (2012) models removed BC entirely. The Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) afflicts many FATs from thermal stress: RSX chip reballing is the fix. Demon's Souls, FromSoftware's breakout title, was virtually unknown in Europe at launch — first PAL prints are now among the most sought PS3 games.
