The PlayStation's hardware revision history is a subject in itself. The Japanese SCPH-1000 had separate high-quality RCA audio outputs — removed in subsequent models. The SCPH-1002 was the PAL launch unit. Early revisions (up to roughly the SCPH-550x) had BIOS chips compatible with certain modchip exploits; later revisions introduced progressive fixes. The Net Yaroze — black developer consoles sold in Europe via subscription — are rare pieces with a fascinating history and a small library of homebrew games distributed on Official PlayStation Magazine cover discs. The first PAL print of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night had different cover art from the US version: the US edition is more internationally sought, but the PAL has its own dedicated market.
