First-generation Wii units (RVL-001) had GameCube controller ports and could run GameCube discs natively — a feature silently removed in the RVL-101 revision of 2011, externally identical. Always the first thing to check when buying used. The library hides unexpected depth: Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower were late-cycle Wii titles of exceptional quality, pressed in limited quantities — today they command real money, especially sealed in PAL. Wii discs use a "burst cutting area" protection on the inner ring that standard DVD drives couldn't read, which suppressed piracy in the early years of the platform.
